Help the People of Sudan
The mining industry has always been about digging deep to uncover valuable resources.
Today, we're calling on you to dig deep for a different purpose - to help rebuild the foundation of a nation in crisis.
Sudan is facing unprecedented challenges since conflict broke out in April 2023:
- Over 5 million people internally displaced between April - November 2023
- Nearly half the population in need of humanitarian aid
- Critical infrastructure and essential services on the brink of collapse
The Bedrock Alliance is a groundbreaking initiative uniting mining and exploration companies to a global humanitarian crisis, with an immediate focus on alleviating the famine in Sudan.
Recognizing the vast resources and capabilities within the mining industry, the Bedrock Alliance seeks to mobilize these assets for impactful humanitarian aid. This campaign leverages the financial strength, technological innovation, and skilled workforce of its member companies to provide support in times of need.
We are announcing this Alliance in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and CIMMYT because we see this as an opportunity to catalyze impact - we can work by, through, and with vetted partners and programs instead of starting from scratch.
USAID's current priorities include providing life-saving assistance to conflict-affected populations in the Darfur region, South Kordofan and Blue Nile. USAID’s Rapid Response Fund—managed by the International Organization for Migration—provides short-term funding to national and international relief agencies responding to acute needs and rapid onset crises in Sudan.
How You Can Support
Together, mining and exploration companies can play a pivotal role in addressing global humanitarian challenges, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and resilient world - even when the crises occur in countries that do not have a large mining industry presence. Here's how you can help.
Financial Contributions
A primary focus of the Bedrock Alliance is financial contributions. These financial resources will be channeled directly into tax-deductible initiatives that provide immediate aid, such as food, water, and medical supplies, to the famine-stricken regions of Sudan.
Additionally, the funds will support long-term projects aimed at building resilient communities, such as agricultural development programs, infrastructure improvements, and educational initiatives.
By pooling their financial resources with those of other donors and agencies like USAID, member companies can make a significant and lasting impact on the ground - true catalytic funding.
In-Kind Contributions
Volunteer labor and in-kind contributions form the second key area of focus for the Bedrock Alliance.
Mining and exploration companies possess a wealth of specialized skills, equipment, and technology that can be repurposed for humanitarian aid.
The Alliance will organize volunteer teams composed of engineers, geologists, and other professionals to assist with relief efforts. These teams will utilize their expertise to support infrastructure projects, such as drilling wells for clean water, mobilizing fertilizer and soil health additives, and monitoring weather and environmental signatures.
Moreover, companies can donate equipment and technology, such as satellite imaging tools or renewable energy tools, to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of relief operations.
Citizen Scientist Initiatives
The third focus area of the Bedrock Alliance is citizen scientist initiatives, which engage local communities and member company employees in data collection and analysis to support relief efforts.
By leveraging the widespread presence of mining operations and their workforce, the Alliance can gather valuable data on environmental conditions, resource availability, and infrastructure needs in crisis-affected areas. This data will be used to inform and optimize relief strategies, ensuring that aid is directed where it is most needed.
Citizen scientist initiatives also empower local communities by involving them in the relief process, fostering a sense of ownership and collaboration.
Your contribution will go a long way to:
Deliver
Emergency food, water, and medical supplies.
Support
Displaced families with shelter and basic necessities.
Rebuild
Critical infrastructure like hospitals and water systems.
Invest
In long-term development and peace-building initiatives.
